Obtaining a tertiary education can be quite expensive, and many students struggle to finance their education. However, many sponsors and bursars recognize academic excellence and offer financial assistance to students who need it. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is committed to supporting its students through various bursary programs. This article will focus on the internal bursaries offered by UJ, including merit bursaries, honours bursaries, and external bursaries.

Internal/Merit UJ Bursaries

UJ offers several merit bursaries to its students. These bursaries are awarded based on academic merit and are available to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The merit bursaries available at UJ include:

Undergraduate Merit Bursary: This bursary is awarded to students who achieve exceptional results in their final Grade 12 exams. The bursary is automatically allocated to the student’s account.

Leadership Awards Bursary: This bursary is awarded to students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills during their studies at UJ.

Multiple Degrees Bursary: This bursary is awarded to students who are pursuing multiple degrees simultaneously.

M&D Merit Bursary: This bursary is awarded to students who are pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree at UJ and have achieved exceptional academic results.

Merit Bursaries Application 2023: Applications for the current academic year will be open on the 15th of April 2023. The online merit bursaries portal for 2023 will be active and available to all currently registered students for this academic year on the above-mentioned date.

To calculate your Admission Point Score (APS) from your equivalent final Grade 12 results, UJ provides a tool on its website. All other merit bursaries will automatically be allocated to the student’s account.

Honours UJ Bursaries

UJ offers Honours bursaries to students who are pursuing an Honours degree in specific study areas. These bursaries cover the full tuition fees for the student’s Honours degree. However, they are subject to the availability of funds and the terms and conditions of the bursary. To be eligible for the bursary, students must be accepted or conditionally accepted for an Honours degree at a host department. The Honours bursaries are only available in the following study areas: Art, Design and Architecture, Education Economics, Financial Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities, and Management Science.

External UJ Bursaries

UJ encourages its students to apply for external bursaries from different companies, municipalities, and government departments. These bursaries are funded by external sponsors and bursars and may be awarded based on academic merit or financial need. Students are urged to ensure that they adhere to the closing dates and requirements of each bursary when applying. The University Bursary Policy limits multiple awards to individual students to ensure that bursary funding is spread out to a larger pool of students.

Conclusion

UJ is committed to providing its students with financial assistance through various UJ Bursaries. Internal bursaries, including merit bursaries and honours bursaries, are available to students who meet specific criteria. UJ also encourages its students to apply for external bursaries from different sponsors and bursars. It is essential for students to ensure that they adhere to the closing dates and requirements of each bursary when applying.
